Hebrews 13:5-6: A Brief Reflection

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” - Hebrews 13:5-6 ESV

This passage has been on my mind for the past 3 weeks because it speaks to issues that we encounter each and every day of our lives as disciples. Namely, how are we to live as faithful followers of Christ while still in the world? We are, as Alistair Begg always says, "walking upright in a world where everyone is standing on their heads." Therefore we encounter moments where we might find it difficult to live a kingdom life.
This passage offers us the reassurance to continue. God has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Since God said that, we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can [anyone] do to me?"
In a day when many of our actions are determined by fear ("What if we run out of money? What if they don't like us? What if nobody comes?), we have a guaranteed assurance of the presence of God. And with that, we ought to live with confident and bold love in this upside down world, because God is with us.
But with all things this is easier said than done. I pray that God gives us the grace to not only say, "The Lord is my helper," but also live with The Lord as our helper.
