Satisfied in God
This morning I was listening to a song by Audrey Assad called I Shall Not Want.
The lyrics reminded me that the best way for one to escape a life of sin is by pursuing God. As Thomas Chalmers appropriately titled sermon suggests, there is an expulsive power in a new affection. People will not forsake the wickedness that is currently appealing to them because the Bible told them that greed, lust, pride, etc, are bad. After all, we have all used these, and many more, to our advantage. Therefore, ridding ourselves of them won't happen through sheer force of will. The only way a person will forsake them, is by pursuing something that is better; namely, God.So Audrey Assad sings:
I shall not want, no, I shall not want... When I taste Your goodness I shall not want.
When a person is deeply satisfied in God, when they taste His goodness, they won't want for all the other things. Indeed, the "reward" of those other things will finally appear trivial and so worthless. Then a pursuit of those things will fall off as easily as one is driven away from tepid water to cool fresh water.Lord, help us desire you more, and become so deeply satisfied in you that we can say with the psalmist, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."
